What is AI readiness?
AI readiness is how easily AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity can reach, read, and trust a page. It covers whether AI crawlers are allowed to fetch the page, whether the content has clear structure and structured data (schema), and whether the page is technically healthy. This is the work behind AI SEO, also called GEO (generative engine optimization) or answer engine optimization.
Can ChatGPT and Claude actually read my website?
Only if your robots.txt allows their crawlers. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and other assistants each use named bots to fetch pages at answer time. If those bots are blocked, your page can never be used in an answer. The extension reads your robots.txt directly and tells you exactly which AI crawlers can and cannot reach the page you are on.
Is the extension free?
Yes. The AI readiness checker is completely free for everyone and needs no account. Click the toolbar icon on any page and you get a score out of 100, an AI crawler access check, a structured-data check, and prioritized fixes. The only part that needs an account is the optional reply copilot, which is available to SurfacedBy Pro customers.
Does it send my data anywhere?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser. Nothing about the page you are viewing is sent to SurfacedBy, and no account is required for the checker. The extension uses the activeTab permission, so it only reads a page when you click the icon.
Which AI crawlers does it check?
It checks the named bots that AI assistants use to fetch pages, including OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (ChatGPT), ClaudeBot (Claude), PerplexityBot (Perplexity), Google-Extended (Gemini and Google AI Mode), and more. It separates the live-citation crawlers that fetch pages at answer time from training crawlers, where blocking is a legitimate choice.
What is the difference between this and the SurfacedBy platform?
The extension checks whether one page is ready for AI: it audits crawler access, structure, schema, and technical health. It does not measure whether you are actually cited. That is the platform's job.
